What is Agarwood?

Agarwood ( also known as Oud , Aloeswood , Eaglewood or Gaharu ) is one of the rarest, most valuable and sought after woods in the world. It is not a website naturally aromatic wood under all circumstances, but is formed as a result of a tree’s own defense process. It is produced in the heartwood of certain tree species in the genus Aquilaria (mainly Aquilaria malaccensis , Aquilaria crassna , Aquilaria sinensis and others), when they are infected by a specific type of fungus ( Phialophora parasitica ).

In response to the infection, the tree produces a dark, aromatic resin that permeates the wood, creating dark, dense grain. This resinous, fragrant wood is known as agarwood. The formation process can take decades or even centuries. Uninfected agarwood (sapwood) is non-aromatic and has little value.

Due to its natural rarity, slow formation process, and extremely high demand, agarwood is extremely expensive, and unfortunately, many Aquilaria species are critically endangered. For this reason, its trade is strictly regulated by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).Wild) . Nowadays, a large part of agarwood is produced by artificially inducing infection in plantations.

Types and Qualities of Agarwood:

The quality and value of agarwood varies greatly depending on several factors:

Tree Species : Although all are Aquilaria , some species produce higher quality resin or more complex aromatic profiles.

Geographic Origin : Countries such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and Laos are major producers, and each region may have unique aromatic characteristics.

Resin Content : The higher the resin impregnation and the darker the color of the wood, the higher its value.

Age and Formation Process : Wood that has formed naturally and over a longer period of time is generally the most valued. Artificially induction-grown wood is a sustainable alternative but may have different aromatic profiles, but for sustainability reasons, it is the most suitable.

Form and Purity :

Chips or Pieces : Used for burning, distilling or carving.

Powder : For incense or extraction.

Oud Oil (Agarwood Oil) : Obtained by distillation of the resinous wood, it is one of the most expensive essential oils in the world, with a deeply complex, woody, animal, sweet, smoky and balsamic aroma.

Main industrial applications of Agarwood:

Agarwood is a luxury product and a high-end ingredient with very specific applications:

Perfumery and Fragrances (Oud) : It is its most prestigious and highest value application.

Luxury Perfumes : Oud oil is a fundamental base note in high-end perfumery, especially in oriental and woody fragrances. It provides unparalleled depth, complexity, and tenacity, resulting in a very distinctive and powerful aroma.

Fixative : Being a very dense and low-volatility oil, it acts as an excellent fixative for other lighter notes.

Incense Making :

The wood itself (especially the chips) is burned directly to release its aroma in religious ceremonies, meditation, or simply to spruce up luxurious spaces. It is a sacred incense in many cultures.

High-quality agarwood powder is used to make incense sticks or cones, often blended with other aromatic woods or resins.

Pharmaceuticals and Traditional Medicine :

In traditional Asian medicine (Chinese, Indian, etc.), it has been used for its calming, carminative, digestive, and stimulating properties . It is believed to help relieve asthma, digestive, and nervous problems.

It is studied for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Aromatherapy and Wellness :

Oud oil is highly valued in aromatherapy for promoting deep meditation, spiritual connection, calm, and stress relief . Its aroma is considered grounding and transformative.

Jewelry and Crafts :

High-quality agarwood, especially the larger, resin-impregnated pieces, is used to carve small figurines, rosary beads (tibha), bracelets, and art objects, and is appreciated for its unique grain and lingering aroma.

Legal trade in agarwood requires rigorous documentation and compliance with CITES regulations to ensure sustainability and legality of origin.
