What is Agarwood?
Agarwood ( also known as Oud , Aloeswood , Eaglewood or Gaharu ) is one of the rarest, most valuable and sought after woods in the world. It is not a website naturally aromatic wood under all circumstances, but is formed as a result of a tree’s own defense process. It is produced in the heartwood of certain tree species in the genus Aquilaria (mainly Aquilaria malaccensis , Aquilaria crassna , Aquilaria sinensis and others), when they are infected by a specific type of fungus ( Phialophora parasitica ).
In response to the infection, the tree produces a dark, aromatic resin that permeates the wood, creating dark, dense grain. This resinous, fragrant wood is known as agarwood. The formation process can take decades or even centuries. Uninfected agarwood (sapwood) is non-aromatic and has little value.
Due to its natural rarity, slow formation process, and extremely high demand, agarwood is extremely expensive, and unfortunately, many Aquilaria species are critically endangered.
